Who We Are
iDiaries
We Aim to Spread Awareness on Animal Welfare.
Animal Maltreatment is an underlying issue often overlooked by everyday constructs.
We aim to do this through a Language-Discourse-Context Analysis of the Netflix Film Okja.

What is Okja?
Okja is an eye-opener film that exposes the reality of animals being maltreated in the food industry.
It gives awareness of the atrocities that happen behind closed doors of corporate facilities
and urges the viewers to be sympathetic towards animals who are sentient living beings.
Okja Advocates for Animal Welfare
Okja uses narrative techniques to highlight the ideology that animals are sentient beings who are capable of feeling emotions. Some of these techniques are the use of:
Music was used to influence the audience’s feelings and emotions.
Some examples are the fast, happy music to excite the audience for the thrilling adventure or the use of slow, sad music to appeal for the audience’s empathy.
Focalization was used to highlight a specific perspective in order to help the viewers see where the characters are coming from.
Duration & Frequency
The duration and frequency of the scenes were also strategically placed to give importance on the scenes that highlight the ideology that animals are capable of feeling emotions.
Through these, we see the ideology that animals have feelings and that they have to be respected and valued.
In the content page, the first two posts are brief recall focusing on the main ideology the film presented. The succeeding posts are the other problematic ideologies it presented and suggestions on how these can be corrected
Inaccurate Representations of the Film
Despite the aforementioned strategies that highlight a crucial ideology, there are still other problematic ideologies portrayed in the film that have to be addressed and corrected.
Ideological Problems in Okja
Reworking the Narrative
Remarks
As a group of Science and Engineering students who are passionate about animal welfare, we immersed ourselves in the film Okja to analyze its core message on the issue of animal abuse. We studied the bits and pieces of the film’s narrative structure, discourse, context, and language to uncover the underlying ideology it promotes to the audience. In the process, we were able to see and understand how the film used narrative devices to relay and highlight the message that animals should be cared for and respected. Aside from its main ideology that would be a foreground for more positive treatment of animals in the future, we were also able to dig in problematic ideologies the movie purposely or accidentally presented. Utilizing what we know of the power of central elements of a narrative, we suggested possible reworkings needed to be enhanced in order for the film to show an overall ideology that is aligned with what we are fighting for.
